Healed and Thankful by Melani Pyke © Melani Pyke. melpyke.com. Used with permission.

Healed and Thankful is artist Melani Pyke’s (melpyke.com) depiction of Jesus with the one man who returned in gratitude after being healed of leprosy. Interestingly, it is a painting the artist created in front of a live audience. Uncomplicated in its composition, the image presents the viewer with Christ’s embrace of the “thankful leper,” as he is sometimes known. The artist incorporates a few details that, at first glance, might escape the viewer’s eye, but which can aid us in our prayer with this image.

Notably, the Christ figure faces the viewer, offering his embrace to someone whose face we are left to imagine. While Jesus wears the garment we expect, the typical tunic of first century Palestine, the healed and thankful one is dressed in an old, comfortable sweater and well-worn slacks. Is this a portrait of me, or a dear relative or friend, receiving the healing love of Jesus? Whoever it is, they seem to be still a bit weak in the knees, astonished at the miracle Jesus has performed in their life. As ever, the All-Generous One lovingly supports the grateful recipient of his loving-kindness.

Bright light shines all around the pair. Where does it come from? Perhaps it emanates from Jesus himself, or maybe it is the love of God the Creator who smiles upon the beloved Son and the work he does for the good of all creation. Or maybe— just maybe—it is divine glory shining brightly because someone recognizes God’s grace and love in their life.
